The Gold Standard of Resilience with Ryan Murphy

The Gold Standard of Resilience with Ryan Murphy

On this episode of The Breakout, we’re joined by nine-time Olympic medalist and backstroke legend Ryan Murphy. Known for his exceptional ability to manage the highs and lows of elite competition, Ryan shares invaluable lessons in resilience, leadership, and excelling under pressure. Then, if you’re looking to build a winning mindset, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

From Rookie to Record-Breaker

Ryan Murphy’s swimming career began with one defining trait—an intense drive to win. From an early age, his competitive spirit fueled big dreams, including a vision of the Olympics long before he knew how it would come to life. Over the years, his relentless work ethic and determination shaped him into the world-class champion and record holder he is today. As a result, Ryan’s unwavering commitment and willingness to embrace challenges define his extraordinary career.

Of course, Ryan’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. For example, at the 2024 Paris Games, he missed qualifying for the men’s 200m backstroke finals by a mere tenth of a second—an agonizingly slim margin. This came shortly after securing a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke. Rather than letting disappointment linger, Ryan quickly pivoted, choosing to focus his energy on the positives. His ability to compartmentalize emotions and bounce back exemplifies his mental toughness.

“I’ve learned to roll with the lows the same way I celebrate the highs. Self-awareness and preparation are key to managing the unknowns.”

Strength in Teamwork

Although swimming is often seen as an individual sport, Ryan views his success as a product of collaboration. Training alongside elite teammates has been instrumental in sharpening his skills and maintaining his drive.

“I’ve had a training partner in five of my six Olympic finals. When you’re surrounded by people who push you every day, complacency isn’t an option.”

Whether in sports or business, Ryan underscores the importance of fostering strong, growth-minded teams to break boundaries and achieve remarkable goals. By surrounding yourself with the right people, you create an environment where excellence becomes the standard.

Strategies for Building Resilience

Throughout the conversation, Ryan shared actionable tips that go beyond the pool, offering strategies anyone can use to navigate challenges:

Control What You Can – Focus on factors within your control, even when circumstances are less than ideal. Small adjustments, like optimizing your environment or routine, can make a big difference.

Turn Pressure into a Strength – Nerves are normal, but reframing them as excitement can fuel your performance. Instead of letting stress overwhelm you, use it to your advantage.

Build a Strong Support Network – Surround yourself with people who challenge and uplift you. Whether they’re teammates, mentors, or colleagues, choose those who will advocate for you and push you to grow.

Process Setbacks Intentionally – Acknowledge failures without letting them define you. Take the time to reflect, learn from the experience, and move forward stronger.

Stay Adaptable – Flexibility is key to long-term success. When things don’t go as planned, look for alternative solutions and keep going. The ability to adjust and innovate will always set you apart.

Making a Difference Outside the Pool

Beyond his personal achievements, Ryan is committed to making an impact. Through his partnership with Goldfish Swim School, he’s championing water safety education. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1–4, but formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk by 88%. By advocating for early swim education, Ryan is helping families take proactive steps to prevent tragedy.

Major Takeaways from Ryan Murphy

Ryan’s success is built on mental, physical, and emotional strength. Here are three takeaways to apply to your own life:

Growth Happens in Discomfort – Embrace challenges to build resilience and prepare for success. Stepping outside your comfort zone is where real transformation begins.

Create a Future-Focused Mindset – Keep setbacks in perspective, and don’t let them derail your progress. Stay focused on your long-term goals, and trust that obstacles are just part of the journey.

Every Achievement is a Team Effort – Collaboration and support amplify individual accomplishments. Whether in athletics, business, or life, success is rarely achieved alone.
